Arabic Morphology | Sarf – Sealed with Misk

Why study Arabic Morphology (Ṣarf)?

The science of Ṣarf is indispensable for any serious student of knowledge. It deals with how words are formed and transformed from their roots, and without it you can easily misunderstand the meanings of Qur’ān, Sunnah, and classical texts. While Nahw focuses on word endings in sentences, Ṣarf focuses on the structure and form of the words themselves. Together, they form the backbone of Arabic understanding.

A student who neglects Ṣarf will struggle to distinguish between words like:

  • كَتَبَ (he wrote)
  • كاتِب (writer)
  • مَكْتوب (written)

All of these stem from the same root, but without Ṣarf, the differences in meaning and usage remain hidden.

What is Arabic Morphology (Ṣarf)?

Ṣarf is the study of word patterns and derivations. It teaches you how to conjugate verbs across past, present, command, and how words change into nouns, participles, or other forms.

It is the science of Arabic word formation, revealing the depth and precision of the Arabic language.

Who is this for?

This course is for:

  • Students who want to strengthen their foundation in Arabic and progress towards mastering the language.
